Contractor crews on a Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) project today will remove a small section of new asphalt on State Route 501 just east of the new interchange at I-5 to install traffic loops for the signal. This work is being redone at no cost to taxpayers.
Drivers on SR 501 will encounter single-lane closures from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. this afternoon, Friday, Sept. 24. Delays of up to 20 minutes are possible.
On Wednesday, Sept. 22, crews mistakenly paved up to the new SR 501 interchange bridge before installing the traffic loops. The traffic loops control the timing of the signal.
Crews will remove the recently paved asphalt, install the traffic loops in the lower layer of pavement and then repave the roadway. The loops are placed under the final layer of asphalt to protect them from heavy traffic and ensure a longer life.
This work is part of the $23 million I-5 – SR 501 Ridgefield Interchange project, partially funded through the 2009 Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The project is on-schedule to be complete late this year.
