Distance pumpkin hurl back by popular demand

BURLINGTON, Wash. (AP) — The long-distance pumpkin hurl is back by popular demand at Saturday’s Harvest Festival in Burlington.

Organizers had tabled the contest in favor of an accuracy toss after pumpkins were hurled farther than expected.

But Burlington Park and Recreation’s Christi Kinney tells the Skagit Valley Herald that the accuracy toss wasn’t as fun and people like “to gun those things as far as they can.”

Competitors using a medieval style catapult called “trebuchet” can launch pumpkins into the air, but only up to 1,400 feet.
