Defending champ Smith shares top spot in Mid-Am

BRIDGEHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Defending champion Nathan Smith, Scott Harvey and Tim Hogarth shared medalist honors Sunday in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship with 36-hole, stroke-play totals of even-par 144.

Smith, the 32-year-old Pittsburgh player who also won the event in 2003, shot an even-par 72 in windy conditions at The Bridge after opening with a 72 at Atlantic. Hogarth, from Northridge, Calif., had a 71 at Atlantic, and Harvey, from Greensboro, N.C., shot a 73, also at Atlantic.

The top 64 advanced to match play at Atlantic in the event for players 25 and older.
