BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) — Bellingham police say a toddler holding her mother’s hand while crossing a street was killed Thursday when one car slammed into another, pushing the second vehicle into the family.

Police spokesman Mark Young says a 17-year-old Bellingham High School student has been arrested for investigation of vehicular homicide. Young says that young woman was driving a silver car that slammed into the black sedan that hit the family.

The toddler’s mother was injured and taken to a nearby hospital for observation. Her two other children, an 8-year-old girl and 5-year-old boy, were unhurt.

The Bellingham Herald says the family was not immediately identified.

Young says the 22-year-old woman driving the black sedan was shaken up but not injured. She was not detained.
