MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) — A freight train struck and killed a man walking on Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks Friday morning at Mount Vernon.

Police say the train blew its horn and couldn’t avoid hitting the 18-year-old.

Railroad spokesman Gus Melonas says the train was traveling about 40 mph. It had originated in Everett and was servicing businesses in the area.

The fatality did not occur at a crossing.
