MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — A former Medford police officer has been convicted of perjury in a case that involved more than $12,000 in unemployment benefits, a phantom phone call and claims of verbal abuse and sexual impropriety.

The Mail Tribune reports that a Jackson County jury took just an hour to find Joshua Danrich guilty Thursday by a count of 11 to 1.

The 12-year veteran of the Medford Police Department broke down in tears as Judge Tim Gerking sentenced him to 80 hours of community service and three years on probation.

Danrich was fired in January 2010 because police say he lied to his superior officers about a phone call. Danrich in turn claimed a supervisor was retaliating because Danrich complained about him.

Prosecutors said Danrich lied to qualify for unemployment benefits.
