AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Florida State’s Ngonidzashe Makusha won the long jump at the Texas Relays on Friday, showing up defending NCAA outdoor champion Marquise Goodwin of Texas on his home turf.

Makusha won with a wind-aided leap of 27 feet, 614 inches, serving notice that the 2008 and 2009 NCAA champion is ready to go after another title. Makusha redshirted last season and did not compete because of injuries.

Texas A&M’s Melvin Echard took second with a leap of 26-612 on his final attempt. Goodwin fouled twice in his last three attempts and ended up finishing third at 26-534.
