SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Senate has voted to ban the use of a potentially harmful chemical from baby bottles, children’s sippy cups and reusable water bottles.

The Senate’s 20-9 vote on Thursday sends the measure to the House.

The bill targets bisphenol-A, which is commonly abbreviated BPA. Proponents of a ban argue that the chemical disrupts hormones in young children, sometimes causing the early onset of puberty and severe health problems later in life. BPA-free containers are available in stores, but proponents of the ban say some parents don’t know that the chemical is potentially harmful.

Opponents argue that there’s no conclusive proof that small amounts of BPA are harmful to children.
