SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners chose versatility over experience, selecting Chris Gimenez from Triple-A Tacoma to take the spot of injured backup catcher Adam Moore.

Seattle made the move on Friday ahead of its home opener against Cleveland.

Moore was injured late in Wednesday’s loss at Texas and an MRI revealed a torn meniscus in his right knee. Moore was placed on the 60-day disabled list on Friday and will undergo surgery that has yet to be scheduled.

Seattle went with Gimenez instead of veteran Josh Bard in part because of Gimenez’s versatility. The 28-year-old played catcher, first base, third base, left field and right field during spring training.

Gimenez split last season between Cleveland and its Triple-A club at Columbus. He hit .190 in 28 games with the Indians last season.
