Letter: Never leave home without essentials

The Columbian
Published: April 8, 2011, 12:00am

The March 20 story “Rescue at Ape Cave” by John Branton was a much more comprehensive and informative treatment than is normally given of a too-oft-told tale.

Two ill-prepared men were rescued near Ape Cave by four well-equipped and knowledgeable hikers, Travis Tanaka, Kelly Peters, John McCluskey and Chris Falconer, and several fine emergency organizations.

A helpful addition to that story would have been the list of “10 essentials” that all mountaineers and hikers need to carry on all trips. Outdoor people developed this list over many years of painful and sometimes deadly experiences. Here they are:

  1. Map.
  2. Compass.
  3. Flashlight with extra bulb and batteries.
  4. Extra food.
  5. Extra clothing, waterproof clothing.
  6. Sunglasses.
  7. First Aid supplies.
  8. Knife.
  9. Matches in waterproof container.
  10. Fire starter.

A change of weather or a mistake in route finding can make these small items into lifesavers. The two men rescued now probably understand why it is important to carry these.
