SEATTLE (AP) — Jack Wilson was not in the lineup at second base on Friday night for the Seattle Mariners and judging by manager Eric Wedge’s tone, it could be a while before Wilson returns to the field.
Wedge was noticeably upset during his pregame talk with reporters when asked about Wilson’s status.
Wilson left Wednesday’s game at Texas after committing two errors. Wedge said postgame that Wilson was “hazy” and couldn’t get right, but Wilson told reporters afterward that he was pulled by Wedge.
Wedge said Friday that he was trying to cover for Wilson and that the veteran took himself out of the game. Wedge said he and bench coach Robby Thompson tried to talk Wilson into going back in and called Wilson’s actions “unspeakable.”
Wilson started the first six games for Seattle, five at second base.
