SYDNEY (AP) — Canada’s Paula Findlay won the opening round of ITU women’s world triathlon championship Sunday, outsprinting 2010 Sydney winner Barbara Riveros Diaz of Chile in just over 2 hours, 1 minute.

New Zealand’s Andrea Hewitt was third.

Australia’s defending world champion Emma Moffatt unofficially finished 13th, while Olympic champion Emma Snowsill of Australia was well down the field.

The race comprised a 1.5-kilometer swim (two 750-meter laps in Sydney Harbour), 40-kilometer cycle over eight 5-kilometer laps and a 10-kilometer-run — four 2.5-kilometer laps in the city.

A men’s race, also an Olympic qualifier for London 2012, was scheduled for later Sunday.
