Jennifer Pettit is eager for a three-year adventure that will send her overseas to teach in the Middle East. She’s just waiting for the contract and paperwork.

Pettit, 47, is a Vancouver resident who has taught for 11 years and was a principal for nine years, specializing in alternative and special education. After she was laid off last spring, the Vancouver resident looked far and wide for job opportunities.

Then Pettit came across an opportunity to teach in Abu Dhabi, the capital of United Arab Emirates. She applied, and before long she had an offer. Now she’s waiting for the final paperwork, which has taken more than a month to arrive.

“I want a job. I want to work,” Pettit said. “I would much rather have a job and do something productive.”

Despite the long wait, Pettit said she is still excited and optimistic.

“I’m looking forward to the adventure, meeting new people, seeing a different part of the world,” she said.

That’s not to say she’s completely without concerns. Her blonde hair, Ramadan, the fighting in Libya, cultural norms, a respectable wardrobe and loneliness are all on Pettit’s list of worries.

“The culture is completely different,” she said. “I have no doubt this will be the hardest job I’ve ever had.”

During her time in Abu Dhabi, Pettit hopes to complete her doctorate and learn about the world.

“I hope to come back with another adventure under my belt,” she said. “I’m sure they have things they can teach me.”
