SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A blind man was killed when the brakes apparently failed on a former transit bus in Spokane.

The Spokesman-Review reports 39-year-old Justin C. Gardner of Spokane died Sunday of head trauma. Police say the death appears to be an accident.

A friend said Gardner was checking something under the bus, which was owned by his father, when it malfunctioned.

The friend, Jami Wolf, says Gardner was independent and very mechanical despite his blindness.
