BATTLE GROUND, Wash. (AP) — Most herding dogs are pets that don’t get much opportunity to engage their instinct.

That’s why trainers say they love going to a ranch in Battle Ground called Brigand’s HideOut.

Owner Nancy Ward keeps about 100 sheep on nearly 40 acres where she and other trainers work with dogs. They are trained for working on a farm, for sport or for herding competitions.

The Columbian reports some dog owners bring their pets just for exercise and to learn self-control.

On trainer says the herding dogs love controlling sheep so much they don’t even want a treat.
