WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — A policeman who fatally shot a college football player from Massachusetts during a disturbance in suburban New York has been given the police union’s Officer of the Year award.

The parents of 20-year-old student Danroy Henry Jr. say it’s insensitive to award the officer who fired the shots that killed him. His father says, “Some people see themselves above the law.”

The Police Benevolent Association of the Pleasantville Police Department says it honored Officer Aaron Hess for his dignity and professionalism since the October shooting in Thornwood.

Hess was hit by Henry’s car and fired through the windshield. He was cleared of criminal wrongdoing by a Westchester County grand jury in February.

Henry was from Easton, Mass. His family wants federal intervention.

The PBA said Wednesday the award isn’t meant to offend the family.
