ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) — An electrical engineer who lives in Cottage Grove but commutes to the town of Sutherlin is saving a lot of gas as the first owner of a Chevy Volt in Oregon.

Carey Bailey told the Roseburg News-Review that he’s cut his monthly commuting cost by 80 percent since buying the electric car in January.

The Chevy Volt runs off a lithium-ion battery that is backed up by a gasoline generator that recharges it while driving.

Bailey says he recharges the car by plugging it into an electrical outlet when he gets to work.

But the state is planning to install a series of fast-charge electric vehicle stations along Interstate 5, including ones in Roseburg, Rice Hill and Canyonville. The stations will provide full charges in as little as 15 minutes.
