NIGUA, Dominican Republic (AP) — An 18-year-old Washington Nationals prospect has died in the Dominican Republic from bacterial meningitis.

The team said in a statement Friday that Yewry Guillen died Thursday. It is unclear if Guillen was in contact with other players at the team’s academy. The team referred all questions to Nationals medical officials.

Calls to the team seeking comment were not immediately returned.

Local team representative Moises de la Mota also did not return calls for comment.

Guillen was signed in February to play shortstop.
