US trails Germany 2-0 in Fed Cup

STUTTGART, Germany (AP) — The United States trails Germany 2-0 in the Fed Cup playoff after Christina McHale and Melanie Oudin lost their singles matches.

McHale lost to Andrea Petkovic of Germany 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday. Julia Goerges defeated Melanie Oudin 6-2, 7-6 (5) as the Germans move within a point of securing victory in the best-of-five series.

The reverse singes and the doubles are on Sunday.

The winner will remain in the top-tier World Group and the loser will be relegated. The Americans, who have won the competition a record 17 times, have never been relegated.
