SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Brain scientists plan to study the effects of abuse and neglect on the minds of Washington children in foster care.

The University of Washington’s Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences is conducting the research. I-LABS is working with Seattle-based Casey Family Programs on a study that uses brain imaging technology to understand brain and behavioral development of children in foster care. Forty foster children will be selected to participate in the study.

The Spokesman Review says previous research has shown that persistent fear and anxiety at an early age affect a child’s ability to learn throughout life.

Casey Family’s David Sanders believes there’s an impact on brain development from abuse and neglect and from changing caregivers. He hopes the study can help shape policy and practice.
