BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have recalled left-handed reliever Hideki Okajima and optioned lefty Felix Doubront to Triple-A Pawtucket before Monday morning’s Patriots Day game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The 35-year-old Okajima re-signed in December after a subpar 2010 season and did not make the club out of spring training. He played the last four seasons with the Red Sox and was a big part of their bullpen from 2007-09.
He appeared in five games, throwing 5 2-3 innings of scoreless relief with Pawtucket before he was recalled. He was beat out for the final spot in Boston’s bullpen this spring by Dennys Reyes, who had control problems and was designated for assignment April 8. Reyes cleared waivers and is in extended spring training.
Doubront, recalled April 8, allowed two runs in 2 2-3 innings of relief.
