WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) — Retired teacher Fay Roberts of Pateros keeps busy volunteering at a food bank in Brewster but he’d like a job this summer.

He’s 91 years old.

Roberts has set his sights on becoming a flagger at construction projects.

The Wenatchee World reports he earned his flagger certification last month at a Wenatchee Valley College continuing education class in Omak where he was the oldest person to take the class.

Roberts say he also bought his own “paddle” — the 6-foot pole flaggers use to slow or stop traffic.

Not all employers expect flaggers to have their own paddles but Roberts figures it could give him an advantage over other applicants.
