Prosecutor: Spokane police justified in shooting

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The Spokane County prosecutor’s office says two Spokane police officers were justified in using deadly force on a man who was pointing a gun at another man outside a tavern last Dec. 4.

Chief Deputy Prosecutor Jack Driscoll said Tuesday no charges will be filed against Corporal Zachary Storment and Officer Christopher Douville. The shooting killed Jeremy Groom.

The Spokesman-Review says the officers were responding to a report of a man with a gun outside the Special K Tavern when they saw Groom pointing a pistol at a man later identified as his best friend.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Dave Reagan says Douville ordered Groom to drop his pistol and shot him when he didn’t. Storment has said he didn’t think he had time to order Groom to drop the gun. Storment also fired.

The newspaper says several witnesses reported hearing police order Groom to drop the weapon but questioned whether he was given enough time to do so.
