LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. (AP) — The Portland City Council has voted 4-1 to move forward with plans to extend a streetcar line to the suburb of Lake Oswego. The council’s Wednesday vote comes after the Lake Oswego City Council voted 4-3 Tuesday night to proceed.

This vote was on whether to endorse the extension, one of three alternatives in the Lake Oswego to Portland Transit Project to reduce congestion along Oregon Highway 43. Enhanced bus service and a no-build option were the other alternatives.

Portland Mayor Sam Adams says he’s not prepared to sign off on the project but does want the city to explore it further.

The line could cost as much as $458 million, although most of it would be federal funding.

Portland Commissioner Amanda Fritz voted no, saying resources are limited and some of the money could be used for other basic services.
