HERMISTON, Ore. (AP) — The northeast corner of Oregon has a new big city — Hermiston.

The 2010 U.S. Census shows that Hermiston is now slightly larger than neighboring Pendleton.

The Oregonian newspaper reports the Hermiston population stands at 16,745 — which is 133 more people than the census recorded in Pendleton, 25 miles to the east.

Longtime Hermiston City Manager Ed Brookshier says Hermiston is more of a working town while Pendleton is known for tourism and its rodeo.

But census figures say Hermiston has more young people — 31 percent of the population is under 18, compared to 22 percent in Pendleton.
