Oudin advances, Safina into Qfinals in Morocco

FEZ, Morocco (AP) — Melanie Oudin of the United States advanced with a walkover win Thursday and Dinara Safina defeated Alize Cornet 6-1, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the Grand Prix SAR.

Oudin’s opponent Polona Hercog of Slovenia withdrew with a right ankle injury. Oudin will face Alberta Brianti of Italy, who defeated Ksenia Pervak of Russia 7-5, 6-2.

Safina improved her record against the eighth-seeded Cornet to 3-0. She will play Anastasia Pivovarova of Russia, who upset second-seeded Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-2, 7-6 (5).
