COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) — With some warmer spring weather expected, state officials are reminding Oregonians about staying safe on ocean beaches.

Robert Smith is the beach safety education coordinator with Oregon State Parks. He says to always watch out for sneaker waves and avoid beach logs.

Smith told The World in Coos Bay that it only takes about 4 inches of water to move a 5-ton log that could roll and trap somebody.

And he says sneaker waves can pull people out to sea in rip currents that are difficult to escape.

Smith recommends that anybody going in the water should wear a life jacket. He says he makes his 17-year-old son wear a life jacket even when he’s boogie boarding along the shore.
