CHICAGO (AP) — Dodgers manager Don Mattingly says a missed sign led to a steal attempt during Friday’s 12-2 victory over Chicago that irked Cubs manager Mike Quade.

The Dodgers were leading 8-1 when A.J. Ellis attempted to steal second with pitcher Chad Billingsley at the plate in the top of the fifth inning. That led Quade to wonder about obtaining a copy of Los Angeles’ “unwritten rules” book.

Mattingly said Ellis missed a sign, but also questioned whether an 8-1 lead was comfortable at Wrigley Field. He noted the Dodgers surrendered eight runs in the ninth inning of a 10-1 loss against Atlanta on Tuesday.

Mattingly and Quade talked before Saturday’s game, and the Cubs manager called his counterpart “a class guy.”
