SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say a fight among dozens of prisoners at Oregon State Penitentiary has left some of the prisoners and staff members with minor injuries.

The prison says that the penitentiary was placed on lockdown after the fighting Sunday afternoon and would remain that way through Monday.

The violence began with a smaller fight involving about six inmates. The prison says as guards used chemical spray to control that altercation, some 75 inmates began fighting in a recreation yard.

Guards fired one warning shot and used the chemical spray to control break up the fighting.

The prison says some of the inmates and several guards who responded had minor injuries, but it did not provide exact numbers.

The inmates involved have been segregated from general population.
