King County court weighs options to calm defendant

SEATTLE (AP) — The upcoming trial of an outburst-prone defendant has prompted the discussion of unusual ways to calm the suspected killer in court.

The Seattle Times says that attorneys, jail staff and a King County judge are looking at using an electroshock sleeve on Isaiah Kalebu to shock him if he acts out. They’re also weighing having a therapy dog in court to calm him.

Kalebu is accused of raping two women and stabbing one to death at their home in the south Seattle neighborhood of South Park. He has routinely interrupted court hearings with complaints about his treatment and defense.

Superior Court Judge Michael Hayden has said he’s concerned that a mistrial could result if the outbursts continue.
