Letter: Tap the proven wells

The Columbian
Published: April 24, 2011, 12:00am

Our oil industry, emboldened by the “drill, baby, drill” crowd, is now getting fresh permits to exploit the Gulf of Mexico with no improvements to the faulty blow-out preventers. But don’t expect those new wells to halt the rush to $5-per-gallon gasoline. The industry is reaping record profits and has no incentive to increase production and lower prices. Buried in the back of a recent issue of The Columbian was a brief story that more than half of the Gulf’s proven producing wells are shut down now. Why not turn those wells back on and help our supply?
