Hail, lightning, and heavy snow in mountains

The National Weather Service in Portland has issued a wind advisory for Southwest Washington this morning, warning of wind gusts to 50 mph today.

The advisory is in effect from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. According to the weather service, the winds will start on the coast and rapidly spread inland. They will blow from the south to southwest.

The storm will be accompanied this afternoon by local thunderstorms which will produce localized hailstorms and even more wind.

Rain is certainly part of the mix for the metro area today, and heavy snow will make mountain travel difficult, according to the weather service.

On the Hawaiian island of Maui, the high today will be 85 degrees under mostly sunny skies. At least two carriers — Hawaiian and Alaska — offer flights from Portland.
