PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Two Oregon environmental groups have sued the federal government over a Willamette River dredging project near downtown Portland.
Oregon Public Broadcasting reports the Audubon Society of Portland and Willamette RiverKeeper oppose a Port of Portland dredging project to deepen part of the Willamette harbor.
The Army Corps of Engineers and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have approved the project, and part of the dredging was done last year.
Dan Rohlf with the Northwest Environmental Advocacy Center is representing the two conservation groups. He says NOAA and the Army Corps have acknowledged the dredging will likely kill salmon. But he says the agencies should factor in cumulative impacts.
