Letter: We need instant runoff voting

The Columbian
Published: April 25, 2011, 12:00am

Recently I received a petition to limit terms of our representatives. All this does is deprive us of voting for good representatives who have served us well.

We need to restrict political campaigns. We need to stop allowing the wealthy to buy our representatives. Under the current system, good candidates are outspent, threatened or redistricted out of running. If genuine representatives are elected, by the time they’re sworn in they’re inundated by numerous paid lobbyists and special interests, pressured and intimated to not work for the good of the people and our country. Limited terms won’t stop it.

We need instant runoff voting, as some countries use. For example, if you have six candidates on your ballot, your first choice gets six points, second choice gets five points and so on. The candidate with the most points wins. Instant runoff voting allows for a wider representation of views and discourages the political game playing indulged in by the two-party system.

Corporate influence should again be illegal, so should paid lobbyists being allowed to write laws and push representatives to vote them into laws. Let’s keep representatives who do a good job and vote out those who don’t.
