EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A University of Oregon student has proposed that a stretch of Highway 126 where a Eugene police officer was killed be designated as a memorial to him.

The Register-Guard reports that Beckie Jones created a group on Facebook after the shooting death of Officer Chris Kilcullen last Friday during an attempted traffic stop.

Since Jones created the group Sunday, more than 1,000 people have said they “liked” the page and more than 100 have commented on it.

On Monday, the Eugene City Council approved a resolution expressing its support to Kilcullen for his service to the community and sympathy to his family.

City Councilor Mike Clark said he and others in the city are now looking at the idea of naming a portion of Highway 126 for Kilcullen.
