PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates added outfielder Xavier Paul to the 25-man roster Thursday and designated John Bowker for assignment to create space.

The 26-year-old lefthander was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday and arrived in Pittsburgh late Wednesday. Paul went 3-for-11 this season with the Dodgers and has a .233 career average and one home run in 146 at-bats over 62 games.

Bowker was acquired from the San Francisco Giants at last season’s trade deadline. In 45 games with Pittsburgh since then, he hit .233 with two home runs and 15 RBIs in 86 at bats, including .235 with a double this season.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said he would work get Paul playing time in left and right field.
