FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (AP) — The commander of a Kansas military prison says Army Pfc. Bradley Manning has passed his initial physical and psychiatric evaluation and will be housed with other medium-security pre-trial inmates.
Lt. Col. Dawn Hilton, who runs the prison at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, said Thursday that Manning would be placed in his new cell on Friday.
Prison officials believe Manning is not a suicide risk. Hilton says inmates who are considered suicide risks would not be placed in the general population.
Manning was transferred to the prison last week from the Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va.
Manning’s attorney has complained of his client’s treatment there. He was held in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day, stripped naked each night and given a suicide-proof smock in which to sleep.
