WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is embarking on a day of highs and lows that will take him from storm-ravaged Alabama to Florida to view the final launch of space shuttle Endeavour and visit with injured congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
The president will cap off Friday by delivering a commencement speech at Miami Dade College in Florida. All in all the day illustrates the many roles a president must play, from healer to cheerleader to teacher.
The stop in Alabama was added to the president’s schedule just Thursday as the extent of the devastating tornados there became clear. Nearly 300 people are dead across six states hit by the massive twisters, with more than two-thirds of the casualties coming in Alabama. The president is to visit with survivors there and survey the damage.
