April 29, 2011.

Panthers and Papermakers have been looking forward to this date for months.

A sunny afternoon started with the Camas High School baseball team beating Mountain View 4-1 to take sole-possession of first place in league.

Birthday boy Kurt Yinger struck out 12 batters, and went 3-for-3 at the plate with a 2-run double. Nate Culver and Jeremy Faulkner also knocked in runs during a 4-run first inning for the Papermakers.

Into the evening, the Washougal High School track and field athletes were breaking records left and right during the Panther Twilight meet.

Katie Wright cleared 5 feet, 4 inches to win the high jump and set a new school record.

Brendan Casey soared over 14 feet, 6 inches to win the pole vault and set new meet and school records. He also won the javelin with a personal best throw of 171 feet, 6 inches.

The track belonged to Dylan Croeni. He broke the mile meet and school record with a time of 4 minutes, 23.71 seconds. He also broke the 2-mile meet and school record with a time of 9 minutes, 25.7 seconds.

Kelley Young clinched first in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 15.53 seconds, which might also be a school record.

Kendall Utter came from behind to win the 800 with a personal best time of 2 minutes, 27.22 seconds.

League champions the next day

Camas baseball beat Mountain View 11-5 Saturday to win the league championship.

After scoring three runs in the top of the first inning, the Papermakers added four more runs with two outs in the third. Connor King delivered a clutch 2-run single with bases loaded. Alex Hows followed with a 2-run rope to the left field fence for a double.

Winning pitcher Zach Carter gave up only two runs in 5-plus innings of work. David Patterson closed the door in the last two innings.

The Camas ballplayers and coaches are proud to go 19-0, but a district championship sounds even better. The Papermakers will try to grab that piece of hardware Thursday night, at Propstra Park in Vancouver.

Read much more from the Camas and Washougal athletes and coaches in Tuesday’s print edition of the Post-Record.

See you on the sidelines.
