Talking Points: Jake Locker drafted

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

Congrats to Jake Locker.

As predicted in this space on Thursday, the Washington Huskies quarterback was selected by the Tennessee Titans with the No. 8 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.

At first blush, this could be a good fit for Locker.

Tennessee has announced it will part ways with Vince Young after four topsy-turvy seasons, a history that could mean Titans’ fans appreciate Locker’s loyalty and dedication. Of course, NFL fans aren’t the most patient of groups — especially when it comes to QBs drafted in the first round.

But all of those challenges are for another day.

Today is a time for satisfaction. It is also a day that should make all fans of college football smile. When Locker chose to bypass the draft to play another season with the Huskies, some of us questioned his choice. But Locker had a rewarding final season in Seattle. And on Thursday he got what he deserved.

And so it begins.

The six-month season of dissecting the carcass of the Trail Blazers began Thursday night, with the team’s latest disappointing exit from the NBA playoffs.

It’s sad.

It’s sad that the Blazers can’t stay healthy enough to reach their perceived potential. It’s sad that LaMarcus Aldridge, isn’t yet ready to carry the team in the postseason. It’s sad when a team without jump shooters decides to shoot jumpers.

But, most of all, it’s sad that the Blazers are all we have.

It would be nice to move on. But Portland fans have nothing else. Therefore, these playoff flameouts lead to long-term heartburn and to speculative talk-radio chatter that drones on ad nauseam.
