PHILOMATH, Ore. (AP) — A friend of a Benton County man accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend and their 1-year-old child to death says the couple had just broken up.
Mark McGuire of Corvallis tells the Gazette-Times newspaper that 20-year-old Gustavo David Martinez Aquepuncho and 19-year-old Kelsey Rozetta Baker split up about two weeks ago. The district attorney says Aquepuncho is expected to be charged Monday with aggravated murder following his arrest Friday night.
McGuire says Aquepuncho and Baker were two of his best friends, and news of the killings came as a terrible shock. The couple graduated from Philomath High School in 2009; Aquepuncho was an exchange student from Peru. Both went on to study at Oregon State University, but Baker recently dropped out.
McGuire says the couple had been under a lot of stress, with work, school and caring for their young son, Theo.
