The second annual Fire in the Park event raised more than $19,000 for Share, a Vancouver nonprofit that helps the homeless, Vancouver Firefighters Union President Mark Johnston said Wednesday.

The event, sponsored by the firefighters union, was July 23 in Esther Short Park, and featured family events and a chili cook-off.

The first year’s event raised about $13,000. Johnston said the union plans to hold the event again next year and raise even more money.

“I think we’ll be considerably above and beyond ($19,000) next year,” he said. “We hope to grow this into something that people look forward to every year.”
