Bonamici announces bid for Wu’s seat in Congress

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — State Sen. Suzanne Bonamici says she is running to replace former congressman David Wu.

Bonamici (bahn ah MEECH’ ee) announced her candidacy in a news release on Thursday. She is a Democrat from Portland who has served in the Legislature since 2006.

Bonamici is the third Democrat to mount a campaign in the special election to replace Wu, who resigned Wednesday following published allegations that he had an unwanted sexual encounter with an 18-year-old woman.

Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian and state Rep. Brad Witt have also said they are running in the Nov. 8 primary. Tualatin business consultant Rob Cornilles is seeking the Republican nomination.

The general election will be held Jan. 31.
