LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — His coach and teammates keep talking him up as an emerging leader, a take-charge guy in summer workouts who’ll be a natural fit in Nebraska’s new offense.
Yet fans are still trying to figure out the enigma that is Taylor Martinez.
They saw him as the fleet-footed phenom who drew Heisman Trophy mention the first half of last season. They saw him as the sullen figure who kept to himself on the sideline when injuries prevented him from playing.
They remember him getting dressed down by an unhinged Bo Pelini at Texas A&M after he called his father from the locker room while getting treatment for an injury.
Martinez says Friday that he’s now more experienced and can focus on his leadership skills.
The Cornhuskers open preseason practice Saturday.
