MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Paul Scholes opened the scoring in his farewell match Friday, helping Manchester United rout the New York Cosmos 6-0 at Old Trafford.

Scholes scored on a trademark shot from 20 yards, and England striker Wayne Rooney converted a penalty kick to give a full-strength United a 2-0 lead at halftime.

With a Community Shield match looming against Manchester City on Sunday, United manager Alex Ferguson reshuffled his lineup for the second half. Mame Biram Diouf scored twice, with the other goals coming from the Brazilian Anderson and Danny Welbeck.

On hand for the recently reformed Cosmos was their soccer director, former United great Eric Cantona. This was Scholes’ final appearance with the club he joined in 1994.
