TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Brock Osweiler lost a tight battle to open last season as Arizona State’s starting quarterback and had to wait 10 games before getting his chance.
Osweiler played well in his two games in place of Steven Threet, but faces a much bigger challenge this season as the undisputed starter.
Playing on a team that has more expectations than perhaps any time under coach Dennis Erickson, Osweiler is considered the key cog in determining whether the Sun Devils live up to the hype or spend another bowl season watching on TV.
A onetime basketball recruit at Gonzaga, the 6-foot-8 junior has all the skills to succeed as Arizona State’s quarterback. He also seems to have the right mindset, a quiet confidence that comes with knowing he’ll be the starter.
