ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) — Descendants of the 18th century German-American merchant John Jacob Astor will be attending the city of Astoria, Ore.’s bicentennial celebrations this week.

Mayor Willis Van Dusen said their visit will be the “crown on the entire event.”

A party from Astor’s Pacific Fur Company landed at the mouth of the Columbia River in 1811 and established a settlement.

Members of the Astor family have visited Astoria and made contributions to the community over the years.
