Four athletes from Southwest Washington were among 14 athletes from Washington who participated in the Hershey’s Track and Field Games North American Finals on Saturday in Hershey, Pa.
MaKayla Woods and Brooke Williams of Vancouver, and Caragan Thiel of Camas competed at the Hershey nationals for a second time. Andrew Boyle of Washougal ran in the 400 meters for boys ages 9-10.
Williams placed third in the standing long jump for girls ages 13-14 with a mark of 8 feet even.
Thiel took fourth place in the standing long jump for girls ages 11-12 with a mark of 7 feet, 7 inches.
Woods placed fifth in the 200-meter dash for girls ages 11-12. Her time was 29.16 seconds.
Boyle took seventh place in the boys 9-10 400 with a time of 1:12.83.
The four qualified to compete at Hershey’s marquee meet based upon their times at the state-level meet after advancing through local and district-level meets.
Golfer 12th in Oregon event
Lindsay Aho of Brush Prairie finished tied for 12th in the Oregon Golf Association Women’s Stroke Play Championship. Aho shot 15-over-par 159 for 36 holes, and was the top finisher from Clark County in the tournament that wrapped up on Sunday at Emerald Valley Golf Course in Creswell.
Monica Vaughn, 16, from Reedsport, Ore., won the tournament at 1-under-par 143. Jillian Carlile of Vancouver placed 22nd among 45 competitors at 20-over 164. Madison Alamillo of Battle Ground was 36th at 175.
Hoops on the River seeks teams
Registration continues through Monday, Aug. 15 for the Hoops on the River three-on-three basketball tournament.
The tournament takes place Aug. 19-21 at Vancouver Landing. It has openings in many divisions, including in three tournaments for elite teams.
Among the divisions are tournaments for wheelchair basketball and for Special Olympics athletes, who can register for no charge.
The sixth-annual tournament held on the Columbia River waterfront near the Red Lion Inn at the Quay. It is a fundraising event for Share programs, which support hungry and homeless people in Clark County.

Bowling to support skaters
A cosmic bowling event to raise money for the ice dancing team of Madeline Heritage and Nathan Fast will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Aug. 13 at Sunset Lanes in Beaverton, Ore.
Heritage and Fast, currently on the reserve team for Team USA, are Portland-area teenagers who train at Mountain View Ice Arena in Vancouver.
