PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have claimed infielder Tommy Manzella off waivers from the Houston Astros and optioned him to Triple-A Reno.

Manzella hit .230 with seven homers and 48 RBIs in 109 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City this season before he was designated for assignment on Wednesday. He was the starting shortstop for Houston on opening day last year.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Diamondbacks transferred reliever Juan Gutierrez to the 60-day disabled list Thursday. Gutierrez is out with right shoulder inflammation.

The 28-year-old Manzella hit .225 with one homer and 21 RBIs in 83 games for Houston last season.
