LEADVILLE, Colo. (AP) — Todd Wells, the national cross-country mountain bike champion, has won the Leadville 100 MTB with the second-fastest time in the race’s history.
Wells, of Durango, crossed the finish line Saturday in 6 hours, 23 minutes, 38 seconds. That was about seven minutes slower than Levi Leipheimer’s record-setting time a year ago.
Austrian Alban Lakata took second in 6:27:57, and Alex Grant of Salt Lake City was third in 6:35:32.
Like 2009 champion Lance Armstrong, Leipheimer skipped this year’s Leadville race, known as the nation’s highest-altitude endurance test. Leipheimer is competing in the Tour of Utah in preparation for the USA Pro Cycling Challenge next week in Colorado.
